Pack moving boxes like a pro: the smartest packing tips
When you move house, it is always a dilemma when to start packing. It goes without saying that you cannot postpone everything until the day before the move. On the other hand, you still live in your current home, and therefore not just everything can go straight into the moving boxes. How do you best approach that? What should you pack first when moving house? What type of protective packaging material do you need?
That people are real collectors is something many discover when they move: all the stuff that has been ignored for years and ended up in the back of the closet now needs some attention again. Packing moving boxes is undoubtedly one of the most tedious chores you must arrange before your moving day. But don’t worry: you packed all your stuff like a pro with these tips!
Three stacks for moving success
Before you start filling your moving boxes, it is useful to think about all your belongings. What do you want to keep and go to the new house, and what do you no longer need? Then, every time you pack, make three piles: one pile with the stuff you want to keep, one with stuff you’ll throw away, and one with stuff you can make someone else happy with. This way, you save the packing work and start with a real fresh start in your new place.
Be kind to your fragile things
Bubble wrap, newspaper, and towels will become your best friends while packing. They protect your beloved fragile items during the move so that you do not find any shards when you open the box again after the move. For example, you can put a kitchen towel between each porcelain plate or hide your glasses in (washed!) socks.
With trolleys, everything runs on wheels
Although moving boxes are made of sturdy cardboard, they can only support a certain maximum weight. Therefore, put your heaviest items, such as books, in trolleys, so you can roll them into your new home without carrying them around too much. Two birds with one stone: those large trolleys have also been moved immediately.
Make a survival kit for your first day
Chances are that by the end of the moving day, you will be tired and no longer want to search for your toothbrush and other essentials in one of the many unpacked moving boxes. That is why it is smart to pack everything you will need for your first evening and the next day in a separate box or suitcase. A survival kit with favorite cuddly toys is a must-have, even when you move with children. Take your medicines with you, those medicines which require cold temperature should be kept in chilled packaging box containing ice pack.
Label it!
Perhaps the most important tip of them all: only put things in one moving box that belong in the same room and label the outside of the box very clearly the box’s destination in the new house and which items are in it. Then, a smooth moving day and later unpacking process are guaranteed!
Everything packed? Then don’t forget to forward your new address to the companies where you are a customer. This way, you can be sure that your mail will not be lost.
