A place for every (Christmas) thing

When I put up Christmas decorations in my new home, I am reminded of the reality that everything needs a place. Not that I’m still not super annoyed with the adage “A place for everything”. This week I share with you how I look at handling Christmas decorations when I am faced with the reality that some of them do not have a place here.

Spring cleaning the easy way:

Spring cleaning is one of the phrases I usually avoid. Well, cleaning is something I tend to avoid but spring cleaning seems like a phrase that everyone should just do and that’s it! If you’ve ever been in the “spring cleaning” mood, this is your chance to really open your eyes and see your home in a fresh, new way!

I would also like to note that a wonderful part of the spring “cleaning” can and should include the spring decluttering! When you start looking around your home, moving things to clean behind, or opening the blinds, you may notice more than just dust and dirt.

  1. Check all ceiling fans and luminaires

If you have some ceiling fans, you will probably notice that they get dusty easily – it’s worse the closer you have them to your kitchen! But use a simple notch with your pillowcase over each of the leaves to clean so that the dust falls into the pillowcase instead of all over the floor. Throw pillowcases in the laundry when you’re done!

  1. Wipe skirting boards

Plinths are easily neglected in your home, but if you really look around you will probably notice lots of dirt and dust on them. Use a magic cleansing sponge to get rid of the stubborn streaks and a microfiber cloth with a little castile soap mixture {I use 1 tbsp. in a spray bottle with water}.

  1. Clean the back of the doors on Christmas

Have you noticed the back of doors and around the door handles? Even the walls in a hallway or near a door can get dirty. Be sure to walk around your home and just look at all of these areas. Use the castile soap mixture or the magic cleaning sponge to remove the dirt and grime.

  1. The inside of trash cans

The poor trash can inside our house can get really dirty and dirty! If we do not feed everyone with a bag, they will be dirty and sticky. The simplest cleaning solution is to take them out in the spring air, spray some castile soap mixture on the bottom, scrub a little, then rinse them off and let them dry in the sun! They will be sparkling clean!

  1. Carpet stains

We mostly have carpets in our home, because we have wooden floors everywhere, so I use Spot Shot Instant Carpet Remover to remove the hard stains on our carpets. I spray on the stain and let it soak in for a while. Then I use a damp cloth to dab the place – comes up easily!

  1. Vacuum bathroom fans and hall registers

Another area that is easily neglected from year to year is the exhaust fans in the bathroom and the halls. This is a good time to grab the vacuum cleaner and vacuum out of them. If it is a hall register, be sure to install a new plumbing filter approximately every six months {or more often if needed}. Your air conditioner will work much better with a clean filter on Christmas!

  1. Wash pillows on Christmas

Washing pillows is not as difficult as you might think. You just put them in the washing machine! I have a step-by-step guide HERE to help you wash them. Super easy with Christmas!

  1. Windows and tracks

Now that you can open the windows and ventilate your house again with the fresh spring air, be sure to wipe the inside of the windows with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of castile soap mixed in a spray bottle of water. They can get really dirty and filled with debris on Christmas!

  1. Cleaning the oven

On Christmas I try to get rid of spills, if they are large, directly in my oven. But I cook a LOT in both my ovens every week. So it’s a lot of grease and built up on my oven glass doors. I use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and it comes instantly!

  1. Clean the fridge and freezer on Christmas

Last on our cleaning list is to get a deep cleaning of the fridge and freezer! It’s much easier if you can clean up spills when they happen, but sometimes you just do not always get to it or know about it if you have someone else living in your home with you!
