6 best strategy games on PC in 2022
In the videogame sense, “Strategy Games” is something broad, but it’s essentially about one platform, the PC. There have been successful console forays, but as you will see, our selection of the best titles does not, alas, often open on PlayStation / Switch / Xbox media.
Talking about strategy games, therefore, encompasses many styles. Thus, our selection of the best titles combines:
- real-time strategy with 4X
- management games with grand strategy games

1. Age of Empires IV
Disappeared from the radar in 2005, the Age of Empires franchise has signed its return in November 2019 with a small trailer. Age of Empires IV was released two years later and it honors the previous episodes of a franchise that will be remembered by all RTS (Real-Time Strategy game) fans.
In paying homage to the second opus of the franchise, Relic Entertainment is not the most enterprising, and its Age of Empires IV is not the revolution that fans have been calling for. It is however a very good real-time strategy game that has multiple components to satisfy the single-player as well as the multiplayer fan, the historian as well as the neophyte. One regret, the technical aspect is clearly behind.
2. Crusader Kings III
Crusader Kings III is the third opus of the franchise imagined by the Swedes of Paradox Interactive. It is a grand strategy game which, to put it simply, means that it focuses on large-scale strategy, leaving aside the micro-management aspect of some games.
If it is not a question of revolutionizing the franchise, Crusader Kings III manages to sublimate it. More beautiful, more readable, and more enjoyable to play, it refines most of the concepts previously implemented so that we can, more than ever, tell incredible stories of alliances, betrayals, and improbable reversals.
3. Gears Tactics
The world of Gears of War is well known to fans of big guns, pure action, and rampage.
Gears Tactics manages with a certain talent to transpose the Gears of War franchise, queen of the violent TPS, to the tactical world.
4. Humankind
Turn-based strategy game, Humankind is what we call a 4X. It is based on the four pillars – eXploration, eXpansion, eXploitation, eXtermination – dear to Sid Meier’s Civilization, one of the pioneers of the genre. In fact, Humankind is still about leading your people from the Stone Age to the first space discoveries.
When you embark on a project as ambitious as Humankind, there are bound to be a few bumps in the road, but Amplitude Studios manages to offer us an exciting alternative to the already available 4X, incredibly time-consuming though!
5. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
Sid Meier is one of the greatest creators of video games and his Civilization is a title that has marked generations.
Rich in many new features, Civilization VI stands out thanks to its “expanded” city concept and its neighborhood system. For the rest, it is a timeless classic that you must at least try.
6. StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty
For almost twelve years, however, the game has not had any competitors strong enough to challenge its dominance in the real-time strategy genre. StarCraft 2 is one of those games that (almost) never gets old despite the years.
